# Breakfast After the Bell · No Kid Hungry — research note for Elena

**Purpose:** Stealable marketplace framing for Power Up meal kits and school sell sheets.
**Hard rule:** RSF products **support** these service models. Do **not** claim official No Kid Hungry or Breakfast After the Bell partnership/endorsement (we have no proof of either).

**Proof voice (Michael):** We already wrap **1M+ meals a month** for these models. Living SKUs + IW formats + site-true 2 oz grains + fruit. Soft contrast: others publish toolkits; we ship the meals districts need to execute.

## What BATB is (public program themes)

Breakfast After the Bell moves breakfast **into the school day** so more students can eat — not only kids who arrive early to the cafeteria.

Nationally recognized models (OSPI / FRAC / NKH Center for Best Practices language):

| Model | How it works | Why it lifts participation |
|-------|--------------|----------------------------|
| **Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC)** | Meals delivered to classrooms; students eat at desks in first minutes of day | Highest participation lift for younger students; removes early-arrival barrier |
| **Grab-and-go / kiosk** | Students pick up IW meal from station / cafeteria / hallway and eat in class or approved space | Labor-smart; strong for secondary / high traffic |
| **Second chance** | Breakfast during a mid-morning break / after 1st–2nd period (often grab-and-go) | Captures late buses and teens who skip early cafeteria |

Public research themes Elena can cite carefully (as program context, not RSF claims):
- Alternative breakfast models associate with **higher participation** vs traditional before-school cafeteria only (Nutrition Policy Institute / UCANR coverage of peer research).
- Large-district surveys (FRAC) report BATB models widely used; districts cite higher participation, food security, and nutrient intake among implementers.
- Barriers BATB addresses: late buses, stigma of “only poor kids eat cafeteria breakfast,” short morning windows.
